Jigjiga is a city in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia, the Ogaden being the area inhabited mostly by ethnic Somalis. The area was claimed by an Ethiopian emperor in the early 20th century and the British, who had interests in the area allowed the area to pass into Ethiopian hands, despite it being an area predominantly used by nomadic Somalis.The city is a 3-4 hour drive from Harar on the road which eventually crosses the border with Somaliland, going onto the capital Hargeisa.My Dad told me that Jigjiga was a dump but this was not our experience. We were first led off by a policeman who seemd to want to introduce us to his boss, but his boss had better things ot do than to meet two foreigners so we spent the rest of the day wandering the streets meeting very many very friendly people. It was a great day.
